Updates from March, 2012

  • By Brian Harper in Geneva

There were plenty of premieres with alternative and eco-friendly technologies highlighted here.

During press introductions, cars’ emissions outputs seemed to carry as much weight as their horsepower. That said, every now and again, the covers were pulled off something that showed a distinctly sporting if not outright scofflaw side — a spit in the eye of the worrisome eurozone crisis and a moribund European sales market.

    Following are my highlights:

    Aston Martin
This year marks the fifth anniversary of an independently owned Aston Martin, once a key member of Ford’s Premier Automobile Group. To celebrate, the bespoke British manufacturer of high-end sports cars launched the production version of its V12 Zagato. The limited-production sports car (just 150 will be made) is based on a short-wheelbase version of the DBS and is a collaborative effort between Aston Martin and Italian styling studio Zagato. The price of the Zagato starts at more than $520,000.

    Chevrolet
Chevrolet showcased a stylish station wagon version of its most popular global model, the Cruze. The Cruze Station Wagon features more generous storage space and a choice of efficient engines, including a new 130-horsepower 1.7-litre VCDi diesel engine with start-stop technology as standard. At 4,678 millimetres, the Station Wagon is slightly longer than the sedan (4,597 mm). Load space ranges from 17.65 cubic feet up to the window line in the rear to 52 cu. ft. up to the roof top with the rear seats folded down.

    Ferrari
Ferrari debuted a new front-engine V12-powered model — the F12berlinetta — which replaces the 599 GTB Fiorano later this year as the marque’s top-of-the-line coupe.

Touted as the most powerful and high-performance Ferrari road car ever, the F12berlinetta’s 6.3L naturally aspirated V12 pounds out an unprecedented 740 hp, which gives the car a superb weight-to-power ratio of just 2.1 kilograms/hp. Torque reaches a peak of 509 pound-feet, 80% of which is available at 2,500 rpm. The engine is mated to the F1 dual-clutch transmission, which has closer gear ratios developed specifically for the F12berlinetta’s performance.

Ferrari says the F12 accelerates to 100 kilometres an hour in 3.1 seconds and to 200 km/h in 8.5 seconds. It also completes a lap of the marque’s Fiorano test circuit in one minute, 23 seconds, faster than any other Ferrari road car. Despite the power, Ferrari claims fuel consumption has been reduced by 30%.Deliveries to North American dealers are expected to begin late in the year.

    Pricing has not been set.

Ford debuted its new production-ready B-Max compact multi-activity vehicle for the European market.

    Ford
Ford debuted its new production-ready B-Max compact multi-activity vehicle for the European market. The B-Max is powered by a fuel-efficient 125-hp 1.0-litre EcoBoost gas engine, with a Duratorq TDCi diesel engine available. The vehicle goes on sale in September.

    Jaguar
Jaguar is taking another crack at a sportwagon with the new and very attractive XF Sportbrake.

Sharing its underpinnings with the XF sedan, the Sportbrake’s overall length grows by just five mm, its weight by less than 70 kg. Rear-seat occupants benefit from 48 mm of extra rear headroom.

Standard practical touches on the XF Sportbrake include remote fold levers mounted within the cargo area to lower the rear seats and powerful LED lights that illuminate the ground when the tailgate is open.Beneath the wagon are extensive changes to the rear suspension. A self-levelling air suspension aids driving dynamics and means the Sportbrake can tow. Initially powering the rear-drive XF Sportbrake is a range of powerful diesel engines in 2.2L four-cylinder and 3.0L six-cylinder form, each directing power via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The launch of the Sportbrake is set to take place in the third quarter of 2012. North America is not on the radar at this time.

If sibling Jaguar can build a station wagon, Land Rover can build a convertible, which is what it has done with the Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept.

    Land Rover
If sibling Jaguar can build a station wagon, Land Rover can build a convertible, which is what it has done with the Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept. The upscale off-road vehicle manufacturer says the Convertible Concept “explores the potential for a premium convertible SUV.” The concept is strictly a design and engineering study with no production plans confirmed.

The soft-top convertible concept is based on the Range Rover Evoque Coupe and features a fully retractable roof system with a Roll Over Protection System [ROPS]. The concept combines capability and versatility with a drop-down tailgate, a comfortable four-seat cabin and all-terrain capability. The cabin is packed with technology, including Terrain Response, surround cameras, an eight-inch touchscreen and a sound system from British audio company Meridian.

    Maserati

The GranTurismo Sport sees an increase in performance as well as an overall restyling that stresses the car’s sporting nature.

The redesigned front bumper optimizes the front air flow for both engine and brake cooling and frames the new headlights with LED technology. The rear of the Sport sees new tail lights in a darker tone. Inside, completely redesigned front and rear seats and a new steering wheel give the cabin a sportier look. Further improvements to the 4.7L V8 see a power bump to 460 hp.

    Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes was particularly busy at the show, with two world introductions — the AMG version of the SL roadster and the A-Class hatchback.

Since the first SL debuted 60 years ago, Mercedes says the letters “SL” have been synonymous with a “symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort.” The new SL is almost entirely built from aluminum and weighs 125 kg less than its predecessor. The SL 63 AMG is powered by a 6.2LV8 that puts out up to 564 hp (depending on where it’s sold) and comes with an improved AMSG sport suspension based on Active Body Control, new AMG speed-sensitive sport steering, a high-performance compound braking system and a seven-speed SpeedShift transmission.

With the continued growth of the premium compact car market, the new and aggressively styled and lowered A-Class five-door hatchback is poised to make a statement.

    Mini
The Mini John Cooper Works Countryman is the first Mini to combine John Cooper Works performance with ALL4 all-wheel drive. This JCW model is powered by a 218-hp four-cylinder engine boasting a twin-scroll turbocharger, gasoline direct injection and variable valve control.

The car comes standard with an aerodynamic kit, a lowered sports suspension, 18-inch light-alloy wheels and specific design features. It is also the first JCW model to also offer a six-speed automatic gearbox as an option.

Another world premiere from Mini shifts attention to a new concept designed to win over new target groups. The Clubvan Concept combines a premium small car with a compact panel van for business and leisure use. It differs from the Mini Clubman, on which it is based, with its two-seat layout, large and flat load compartment and opaque rear side windows.

Porsche’s new drop-top two-seat Boxster weighs less than the previous model and rides on a longer wheelbase and a wider track. Here, the Boxster S.

    Porsche
Porsche’s new drop-top two-seat Boxster weighs less than the previous model and rides on a longer wheelbase and a wider track. It has larger wheels and a new electro-mechanical power steering system to enhance the mid-engined sports car’s driving dynamics.

Available in familiar Boxster and Boxster S guises, both models are powered by flat-six engines. The base model’s new 2.7L motor delivers 265 hp — 10 hp more than its larger-displacement predecessor. The S’s 3.4L motor delivers 315 hp, up five hp. Both models feature a manual six-speed gearbox as standard with the seven-speed PDK available as an option.

    Smart
The Smart fortwo gets an upgraded exterior and a fresh leather/fabric mix inside, giving it a more dynamic appearance. It features a larger radiator grille with integrated logo, front aprons in a new design, horizontally arranged LED daytime driving lights, side skirts and modified rear aprons.

While it is true that the 82nd edition of the Geneva Motor Show was showing some of the side effects of the economic woes that have ravaged the European economy, there was enough shiny sheet metal and slick introductions to keep the tone of the show upbeat.

    Following are the Asian highlights:

    Hyundai
Hyundai showed the next-generation i30 wagon (sold in Canada under the Elantra nameplate).

This time around, the wagon’s overall length runs to 4,485 millimetres, which brings generous cargo capacity. With the seats upright, there’s 18.6 cubic feet and 58 cu. ft. with them folded flat.

While much of the front-end styling is similar to the Elantra’s, the stretched roofline emphasizes the wagon’s utilitarian bent from the B-pillar rearward.

The i30 wagon will be available in Europe with three gasoline-powered engines and three diesel engines ranging from 90 to 135 horsepower. Sadly, the wagon may not hit Canadian roads.

A five-door hatchback, dubbed the Elantra GT, is slated to replace the current Touring (wagon) model. That is a pity, as the i30 wagon represents a wonderful alternative to a sport-ute.

    Graeme Fletcher for National Post

The Infiniti EMERG-E Concept’s powertrain features two electric motors (one driving each rear wheel).

    Infiniti
The two-seater Infiniti EMERG-E Concept is both a plug-in hybrid and full-on mid-engined sports car.

The mid-mounted powertrain features two electric motors (one driving each rear wheel), a lithium-ion battery pack and a 1.2-litre three-cylinder range-extending gasoline engine (range extending in that it drives a generator rather than the vehicle). The combination puts 402 hp at the driver’s disposal, which is enough grunt to whisk the EMERG-E to 96 kilometres an hour in four seconds flat.

On the flip side, it is clean. With a fully charged battery, the EMERG-E drives for the first 50 km on electricity alone. At that point, the gasoline-powered engine comes to life and extends the driving range to 500 km. A big part of the efficiency equation is found in the swoopy body — the seductive carbon-fibre panels wrap an aluminum chassis, which keeps the total mass to a very low 1,600 kilograms — this in spite of the battery aboard.

The word at the show was that this car is more than a concept, with some suggesting it could see production by 2016.

As with each of its last few launches, Kia revealed the latest version of its now familiar grille. In this case, it is worn by the oddly named but stylish cee’d.

    Kia
As with each of its last few launches, Kia revealed the latest version of its now familiar grille. In this case, it is worn by the oddly named but stylish cee’d.

This compact car will be offered in both five-door hatchback and wagon body styles. In Europe, the cee’d will be offered with both gasoline and diesel engines. However, the powertrain of choice is the same 1.6L direct injection found in the current Rio and Soul. What makes the powertrain special is the availability of a new twin-clutch transmission that was developed in-house — it brings faster shifts and better economy because of its mechanical efficiency.

The cee’d’s cabin also marks a big step forward, which is rapidly becoming the norm with each new Kia. The layout is logical, the equipment is plentiful and interior materials are vastly improved. It all comes together such that the cee’d manages to rival, if not exceed, the standards set by the Optima.

While there are no official plans to bring the cee’d to Canada at this point, don’t be surprised if it does arrive. The potential to slide the handsome hatch and wagon between the Rio range and the next-generation Forte, which is arriving next year, is very real. Now that is food for thought!

    Lexus
Lexus revealed the next generation of its RX crossover.

As with the recently released GS model, the biggest change is found in the grille and front-end styling — specifically the bolder face, LED daytime running lights and restyled headlights. The changes to the back end are limited to the tail lights.

As with the GS, the interior has been reworked to make the layout more intuitive while adding a healthy dose of stylistic flare.

Lexus also unveiled a sportier version of the RX 450h equipped with the F-Sport package. This adds a Sport mode that allows the hybrid powertrain to deliver a combined output of 299 hp, which is up four, and tweaks the suspension and steering to give the RX a more dynamic drive.

Mitsubishi pulled the wraps off its next-generation Outlander compact SUV.

    Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi pulled the wraps off its next-generation Outlander compact SUV.

This vehicle signals a change in Mitsubishi’s styling language. The new look is both purposeful and sporty at the same time.

In Europe, it will be offered with a 2.0L four-cylinder gasoline engine that pushes 150 hp and 143 pound-feet of torque. It is married to either a five-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). The better choice, at least on paper, is the 2.2L clean diesel. It, too, makes 150 hp, but it is offered with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. I say the better choice not only because of the superior transmission choices but because the diesel twists out a stout 265 lb-ft of torque (280 with the manual!) while delivering better fuel economy and lower emissions than its gasoline counterpart.

Both engines are available with two- or four-wheel drive. Down the road, there will be a plug-in hybrid derivative.

    Nissan
Nissan revealed where its crossovers could be heading in the near future.

The Hi-Cross Concept is exactly that — a high-riding crossover that boasts room for seven passengers. It also hints at the company’s future styling direction. The key character lines start at the front of the hood, sweeping up and over the front wheel arches before flowing gently to the D-pillars.

The Hi in the concept’s name also surfaces in its hybrid powertrain. Here, an electric motor, which is powered by a compact lithium ion battery, is combined with a 2.0L direct injection gasoline-powered engine and the company’s continuously variable transmission. Nissan claims it delivers the same performance as a traditional gas-powered 2.5L four-cylinder, while consuming considerably less fuel and producing fewer emissions.

Fuel efficiency continues to be a prime consideration for automakers. The fun-to-drive factor is still relevant, but doing so while enduring less pain at the pump was a message repeated often from the podiums here.

    Following are my highlights:

    Audi
The next generation of the premium compact Audi A3 was the highlight of the German automaker’s display.

This latest iteration is 80 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, helping to make the car more agile and more fuel efficient. Among its features is a new level of connectivity that appeals to social media-savvy buyers. European engines for the A3 include a 1.6-litre TDI diesel, with a natural gas powerplant scheduled for introduction in 2013 and a plug-in hybrid slated for 2014.

Audi also took the wraps off a new A6 allroad with quattro all-wheel drive. This crossover is 70 kg lighter than the previous model and delivers a 20% improvement in fuel consumption.
Canadians can salivate over another model that won’t see our shores — the RS4 Avant. It’s a premium high-performance estate wagon with a 4.2L engine that generates 450 horsepower — performance and practicality wrapped up in one stunning vehicle.

The final introduction by Audi was a TT RS plus, offering yet another level of performance for the popular sports car. This version is powered by a five-cylinder engine that produces 360 hp and is capable of pushing the TT RS plus to a top speed of 280 kilometres an hour.

    Bentley
Bentley unveiled an SUV concept called the EXP 9 F and the new Continental GTC convertible. The EXP 9 F may be a preview of an addition to the Bentley lineup — and its first venture into the ultra-high-end SUV market. While the concept uses Bentley’s 6.0L twin-turbo 12-cylinder with an eight-speed transmission, its new twin-turbo 4.0L V8 or even a hybrid powertrain are possibilities if this vehicle goes into production. The new droptop features the 4.0L V8 delivering 500 hp through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It will accelerate the GTC to 100 km/h in just five seconds and its top speed peaks at 301 km/h.

    Reuters

The BMW 6 Series Grand Coupe, which made its global debut here, is the brand’s first four-door sedan with a “coupe” roofline.

    BMW
The BMW 6 Series Grand Coupe, which made its global debut here, is the brand’s first four-door sedan with a “coupe” roofline.

The interior offers the high level of comfort and luxurious amenities typical of the brand, but the addition of foldable rear seatbacks expands the car’s cargo capacity from 460 litres to an impressive 1,265 litres.

Under the hood, the entire engine lineup includes TwinPower turbochargers coupled to an eight-speed sports automatic transmission. While 640i Euro versions will be available with a six-cylinder gasoline (320 hp) or diesel (313 hp) engine, the version coming to our shores in the fall will be the 650i, a V8-powered iteration with 450 hp and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It will be sold as 2013 model.

Sharing the spotlight was the new BMW M6 Coupe, featuring a 560-hp engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch manual gearbox. It’s also equipped with an Active M differential and M-specific suspension. It will accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, yet its fuel consumption has been reduced by 30%.

The M6 Coupe is expected to be available in Canada later this fall, also as a 2013 model.

    Cadillac
The North American luxury car brand is cranking up its efforts to claim a share of the prestige market in Europe and one of its prime weapons in this battle is the 273-horsepower ATS sedan.

This four-door, rear-wheel-drive sedan made its European debut at Geneva and Cadillac brass aren’t being shy about their hopes it will win the hearts (and chequebooks) of luxury car buyers here.

    Fiat
Fiat’s cute 500 coupe is getting a big brother. Fiat introduced the 500L here, a four-door version of its popular Italian charmer. Described as “more 500,” this new version is just 4.1 metres long, but it is capable of carrying five passengers and their bags. Powertrains here start with a 105-p twin-air engine, with European production scheduled to begin in July.

Lamborghini has raised its bar with the introduction of the Aventador.

    Lamborghini
Lamborghini has raised its bar with the introduction of the Aventador. It’s the lowest Lambo ever and its sleek skin is shaped in carbon fibre. The monoque of this all-wheel-drive rocket is also carbon fibre. The engine is a 6.5L V12 that produces 700 hp.

    Lancia Chrysler
The influence of the Fiat-Chrysler marriage is obvious in three models by Lancia, a member of the Italian-based corporation.

Lancia took the wraps off the Thema, a Chrysler 300 clone with Lancia badging that’s available in rear-wheel- or all-wheel- drive formats; the Voyager, a Chrysler minivan with minor alterations; and the Flavia, which is immediately recognizable as the Chrysler 200 convertible.

    Rolls-Royce
High-rollers can set their sights on a new generation of Rolls Royces, the Phantom Series II. Subtle changes have been made to the exterior, such as LED headlights and a single-piece grille surround, while retaining the traditional look synonymous with this iconic brand. Under its skin, however, numerous advances have been made to this new Phantom lineup. Direct injection helps the V12 engine achieve 10% better fuel efficiency while reducing CO2 emissions by 10% as well.

A new eight-speed automatic transmission and rear differential enhance performance. Three models are available: a four-door sedan, a two-door coupe and a drophead coupe.

    Valentin Flauraud/Reuters

A new cabriolet model has been added to the Golf GTI lineup. Features that set this convertible apart from its hatchback sibling, aside from the cloth roof that can retract in less than 10 seconds, include a new front facsia, LED running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels and a rear diffuser.

    Volkswagen
A new cabriolet model has been added to the Golf GTI lineup. Features that set this convertible apart from its hatchback sibling, aside from the cloth roof that can retract in less than 10 seconds, include a new front facsia, LED running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels and a rear diffuser.

It’s powered by the same 210-hp 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that drives the GTI hatch. Torque is rated at 206 pound-feet at just 1,700 rpm. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or an available six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox. The GTI cabriolet will accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds with either transmission. There are no plans at the moment to bring this car to Canada.

VW also introduced the Polo Blue GT, a fuel-efficient hatchback with a 140-horsepower four-cylinder and dual-clutch gearbox that’s capable of reaching a top speed of 210 km/h.
The Up family of subcompact cars adds a four-door sedan and a concept mini van version for urban use called the Cargo Up.

    Volvo
A new five-seat hatchback, the V40, had the spotlight at Volvo. It has a sweeping silhouette with a roofline that hints at a coupe. There’s a hook-like line at the rear door handle that stirs memories of the long-departed P1800. But this car has the latest in technologies, including an interactive dashboard that helps adapt the car and its dynamics to the driver’s preferences. It also has class-leading fuel economy, according to the automaker.

  • GENEVA • Major automakers will roll out 140 models making their global debuts at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show, the head of the show said on Tuesday.

The March 8-18 event at the Geneva Palexpo is expected to attract about 700,000 visitors.

“Geneva may not be the biggest show, but it is certainly one of the finest and most effective image builders for [automakers],” says Andre Hefti, noting that 260 exhibitors from 30 countries representing 700 brands will be there.

For the first time this year, the Car of the Year trophy, will be presented in Geneva, on March 5 before the show opens, after 59 autojournalists judge it. Last year the trophy was awarded for the first time to the Nissan Leaf. This year, there are seven finalists — the Citroen DS5, Fiat Panda, Toyota Yaris, Ford Focus, Opel Ampera, Range Rover Evoque and Volkswagen Up.

  • Nissan has revealed the first details of a hatchback concept that previews the company’s next mainstream B-segment contender, to be sold alongside the Micra city car and Juke crossover.

Called Invitation, the subcompact concept – which will be unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – shows some of what’s promised for the new model, which is due to be launched in Britain in 2013.

The Invitation is an energetic design, says Nissan, with its silhouette showcasing class-leading aerodynamics for enhanced fuel efficiency.

François Bancon, deputy division general manager of product strategy and product planning division, says: “The name we have given to this concept is self-explanatory. It is designed to be inviting thanks to its sensuous exterior design and generous and comfortable interior space, cleverly packaged within compact overall dimensions.”

Combining advanced engine technology, Nissan’s lightweight platform and an aerodynamically efficient body mean the Invitation should achieve competitive levels of fuel efficiency and emissions. Nissan is aiming for an ultra-low CO2 emission target of under 100 grams per kilometre for the most frugal model.

Among the safety features is Nissan’s advanced Around View Monitor safety technology – seen for the first time on a B-segment car – which makes reversing and parallel parking as stress-free as possible.
