Updates from May, 2012

  • Seven automakers, including General Motors and Ford, have agreed to adopt a fast-charging system that can charge electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in as little as 15 minutes.

The group’s goal is to make charging an electric car as simple as filling a gas tank. Chrysler is the latest automaker to join the consortium, which also includes members from Volkswagen and its luxury Audi brand, Daimler, Porsche and BMW.

The ability to quickly charge cars like GM’s Chevrolet Volt and Ford’s Focus Electric is crucial to making them more popular among consumers, said Mike Tinskey, associate director of vehicle electrification for Ford, the No. 2 U.S. automaker.

The charging method championed by Ford and others in the group will be showcased at a electric vehicle conference in Los Angeles this week.

But the approach supported by Ford and others is not compatible with the technology already used by Japanese automakers. Nissan’s Leaf electric car uses the “CHAdeMO” system to quickly charge, for example.

The lack of consensus has slowed the construction of fast charging stations in the U.S. market and illustrates some of the struggles facing the burgeoning electric car industry.

Ford says its system will be used in its vehicles beyond 2020, Tinskey said. ACEA, a trade group of European automakers, will use the charging system for all new vehicle types in Europe beginning in 2017.

“We think this is a very long-term solution,” Tinskey said.

Charging stations equipped with fast charging capability are projected to be available later this year. These stations can cost anywhere from $24,840 to $89,415 depending on how much power is available in a particular area, Tinskey said.

  • Beijing • On the Eve of Auto China 2012, held this year in Beijing, Volkswagen Group, which includes Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat and Skoda, used the famed Water Cube to showcase its future wares — the very place Michael Phelps used to turn the swimming world on its ear.

Why go to such extraordinary lengths? Potential.

While the United States and Germany remain strong markets for the VW Group, it is China that leads the way — of the Group’s almost 2.2-million vehicles delivered in the first quarter of 2012, 30% went to China. Here are some of the highlights from Auto China 2012:

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is powered by a monster 7.9-litre W16 engine that delivers warp-like speed and has a thirst for fuel that’s second to none.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse is powered by a monster 7.9-litre W16 engine that delivers warp-like speed and has a thirst for fuel that’s second to none. With a maximum output of 1,200 horsepower and a mind-numbing 1,106 pound-feet of torque on tap, this open-top speedster runs to 100 kilometres an hour in 2.9 seconds and on to its top speed of 410 km/h! Perhaps more remarkable is that the chassis and race-derived suspension give the Bugatti a claimed lateral acceleration of 1.4 g! Now, lest you think that speed and ultra-high lateral g-forces would ruffle the occupants’ hair, fear not — with the windbreak in place, Bugatti says holding a normal conversation at 200 km/h is still entirely possible. I can hear it now. “Will you slow down or I’m getting out.” “Yes, dear.”

    Porsche Cayenne GTS

The Cayenne GTS, shown at top, which sits between the S and Turbo models, arrives with a meaner look and a 24-millimetre lower ride height. Along with its beefed up look — the larger air inlets in the front fascia being the biggest giveaway — comes a 4.8-litre V8 engine that pushes 420 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed manumatic and all four wheels. The net result is a monster truck that runs from rest to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 261 km/h. Remarkably, the penalty for the extra power and performance is pegged at just 0.2 litres per 100 kilometres more than the base Cayenne S. To ensure the requisite sound emanates from the engine, Porsche has included its twin-flow Sound Symposer system. Essentially, two acoustic channels are linked to the A-pillars. When the driver hammers the gas, flaps in the channels open, giving the occupants an aural treat by amping up the intake noise. Of course, while all of this is going on, flaps in the exhaust are opened to give the GTS a snappy snarl.

    Volkswagen E-Bugster

Following on the heels of the debut of the tin-top electric Bug comes the E-Bugster, a sassy-looking convertible that’s powered by an 85-kilowatt electric motor. It gets its power from a 28.3-kWh lithium ion battery pack that weighs just 80 kilograms. According to VW, this is enough for a 180-km driving range and a run from rest to 100 km/h in 10.8 seconds. The pie-in-the-sky aspect is the claim that the E-Bugster can be “refuelled” in 35 minutes at a charging station equipped with the right charger. Good luck finding that when you need it.

China also played host to the world premiere of the Nissan Sylphy.

    Nissan Sylphy

China also played host to the world premiere of the Nissan Sylphy. Normally, it might slide by as being another of the numerous models that will not be sold in Canada. Well, the Sylphy will become the next-generation Sentra. As with the recently released Altima, the Sylphy/Sentra has been kicked up a notch or two both in terms of its style and content — it is much less entry-level this time around. Up front, a new grille and headlights that are underscored by LEDs accentuate the car’s wider stance, and the side profile of the car shows far more character than the outgoing vehicle. At the back end there are more LEDs in the tail lights. The interior also takes a big step forward, with much less hard plastic and more content, including push-button start and a smart key. A new 1.8L engine that’s married to Nissan’s next-generation Xtronic continuously variable transmission will power the Sylphy/Sentra. While there were no hard numbers released, Nissan says the combination will deliver better performance and fuel economy.

    Volvo V40

Looking like a four-door version of the V30, the all-new V40 is an upscale hatchback that features an oversized sunroof. The interior is certainly a cut above what one expects, with soft-touch materials, watch-like gauges that present information in three distinct formats, along with two of the most comfortable front seats in the business. There is also decent rear seat legroom and 11.8 cubic feet of cargo space. No word on when or if it will come to Canada but, should it make the transatlantic crossing, it will likely arrive with a 180-hp, four-cylinder engine with direct injection and a turbocharger. The latter ensures that 177 lb-ft of torque is delivered at a low 1,600 rpm. As shown, the V40 was offered with a six-speed manual or six-speed powershift transmissions. In keeping with Volvo’s safety philosophy, it will come with everything from lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring to Volvo’s advanced pedestrian detection system.

    Miscellaneous

The award for least noteworthy launch goes to Range Rover. It revealed a special edition of its popular Evoque crossover — one designed in conjunction with former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. The bespoke finish includes 20-inch wheels, a rich leather interior and rose gold accents dotted throughout the three-door Evoque. According to Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s director of design, “Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and a rose gold man’s watch. Apparently, it was the contrast between a slim feminine wrist and a man’s watch that got Land Rover’s mojo going. A grand total of 200 will be available worldwide. Why bother?

Having shocked the world at the Geneva Motor Show with its take on a luxury SUV, Bentley was usurped as the purveyor of the ugliest vehicle on display in China by the Geely Emgrand GE. To say it was battered with a really big ugly-stick is being way too polite! The bulbous nose and gigantic big mouth bass-like slatted grille are only eclipsed in the ugly department by the ungainly crest atop the hood. And, trust me, the view from the rear doesn’t get any better.

TOKYO • Three decades after sidelining Datsun, Japan’s Nissan is dusting off the brand to tap emerging markets, a move sure to stir up nostalgia among fans of the low-cost, fuel-efficient cars.

Analysts say the plan to sell Datsuns in Indonesia, Russia and India will help the auto giant take on fierce competition in those markets without hurting its existing brands or spending time and money on creating a new one.

“Reviving the Datsun brand is better than creating a new brand as the old Datsun cars are still there and recognizable by some people,” says Kota Yuzawa, an auto analyst at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo.

Datsun — the first set of wheels for many adolescents — was a big seller especially in Canada and the United States where its sporty, two-door hatchbacks became synonymous with fuel efficiency during the 1970s oil crisis.

But Nissan phased it out from 1981 as the company pushed its own name onto its fleet of cars.

Last week, chief executive Carlos Ghosn said Datsun would be a “global brand” alongside Nissan-branded cars and its luxury line Infiniti, although there are no immediate plans to sell it in Japan or other mature markets.

“Datsun is part of our history. It was synonymous with affordable and reliable cars,” Ghosn said in Jakarta on Tuesday. “With the return of Datsun, we want to add modernity to it, with a new level of quality, like a high fuel economy.”

Company spokesman Mitsuru Yonekawa says owners of the old Datsun brand were “optimistic about their future, had upward mobility, a strong yearning for possessing cars and yet were somewhat demanding about the quality of cars.”

The updated models will attract “quite similar” customers, he adds.

Automakers have released models targeting specific markets before, but Nissan’s revival of a shelved brand for emerging economies is unprecedented among Japanese automakers, analysts say.

Nissan would not reveal prices or details of the models it will sell from 2014, but the new Datsun may cost as little as 500,000 yen ($6,000), with most parts sourced locally, the Nikkei business daily reports.

Nissan says it is aiming to make Datsun eventually account for about half of its total sales in each market, the company spokesman says.

Russia was among Nissan’s top foreign markets last year, though still far below China and the United States. Asia — excluding Japan — accounted for nearly one-quarter of sales, including Indonesia and India.

Nissan’s move underscores the growing importance of emerging economies, a key battlefield among global auto makers amid stagnating growth in developed markets.

“It reflects the importance of emerging markets not only for Japanese automakers but for all kinds of industries,” says Yusuke Ichikara, economist at Mizuho Research Institute.

The push is also part of a wider trend among Japanese companies that have taken advantage of the yen’s strength in recent years to diversify their business and expand global operations.

“What’s important in doing business successfully in emerging markets is to localize products,” Ichikara says.
“Creating a different brand for affordable cars is a wise move to avoid hurting the image of existing brands.”

Toshiyuki Kanayama, senior market analyst at Monex Securities, says Japanese automakers cannot ignore India, Indonesia and Russia, where the size of the middle class is expected to balloon.

“But there is no way they can beat India’s Tata Motors in terms of prices,” Kanayama says, referring to the ultra-cheap Nano model, which can be had for less than $3,000.

Nissan has said it will invest $400-million in a plant in Indonesia to more than double production capacity from 100,000 to 250,000 vehicles a year by 2014.

The move will mean Nissan, which formed an alliance with Renault in 1999, will be able to make more cars in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy than its main rival Toyota.

  • Car sales in Indonesia leapt 24.2% year-on-year in February as increased supply met pent-up demand among consumers in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

Sales of cars in February rose to 86,407 cars, led by Toyota, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Nissan, according to data from the Indonesia’s Automotive Manufacturers Association (Gaikindo) on Friday.

Sales of cars and motorbikes are an important indicator of consumption in Indonesia, a country with 6.5% growth in 2011 and a rapidly expanding middle class.

On a monthly basis, domestic car sales grew 13.2%, says the association, and revised January sales to 76,365 cars. Average car sales growth in 2011 stood at 18.2%.

“It’s more about supply issues. Toyota has delivered its new variant to consumers and Honda has started to recover after supply disruption from Thailand,” Adrian Joezer, analyst at Mandiri Sekuritas told Reuters on Friday.

Data from Indonesia’s main auto assembler PT Astra International Tbk showed that Toyota sold a total of 33,593 cars in February and grew 15% from a month earlier. Sales of Honda rose 22.6% month-on-month in February to 1,904 cars.

On Friday, the government and Bank Indonesia issued regulations that set minimum down payments for loans of private cars and motorbikes, both for banks and multi-finances.

The regulations came a week after the government proposed a fuel price hike plan to parliament to help the state cope with the rising cost of subsidies amid increasing crude oil prices.

“Most of the consumers are first-time buyers. In 2008, when fuel was hiked by 30%, the impact was only for a month and then rebounded afterward,” says Joezer, adding that buyers of cars are more sensitive to financing liquidity issues.

Last year, the country booked a new sales record of 894,180 cars, up 16% from 2010.

“The issue of rising lending rates will give negative sentiment. In February, consumers were still waiting to see the impact of fuel policies,” says Akhmad Nurcahyadi, an analyst at Jakarta-based BNI Sekuritas.

The worries about increasing transportation costs likely will be seen after the implementation of the new fuel policy and could affect sales in March or April, says Nurcahyadi.

  • LONDON • Nissan says it is aiming to change the face of endurance racing by becoming a founding partner in the most radical motorsport project of its time — the  Nissan DeltaWing. The ground-breaking car was unveilled to the world’s media on Wednesday in London, supported by the full Nissan DeltaWing team.

The streamlined car is unlike any other racing car currently on the track. The driver sits well back in the car, almost over the rear axle, and looks along a long, narrow fuselage to narrow twin front tires. With a rear-mounted engine, the car has a strong rearward weight bias, which makes it highly manoeuvrable, while its light weight and slippery shape make it far more efficient.

Its innovative design and technology has encouraged the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the organizers of the Le Mans 24 Hours, to invite the car to run in this year’s race from “Garage 56,” the spot in the pitlane reserved for experimental cars. As it doesn’t conform to any existing championship regulations, the DeltaWing will not be eligible to compete for trophies and will carry the race number 0.

While the DeltaWing will not be classified for the race, the company is looking to showcase the pioneering technology that will show one potential direction for the future of motorsport and will feed into the research and development of future technologies, which might filter down to Nissan’s road car product range.

A race-prepared 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, featuring direct gasoline injection and a turbocharger, will power the DeltaWing, which is half the weight and has half the aerodynamic drag of a conventional race car. The engine, badged DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline – Turbocharged), is expected to produce around 300 horsepower, sufficient to give the car lap times between LMP1 and LMP2 machines at Le Mans, despite having only half the power of those conventional prototypes.

Nissan was invited to participate by the existing group of core partners — designer Ben Bowlby, American motorsport entrepreneur Don Panoz, the All-American Racers organization of former U.S. Formula One driver Dan Gurney, Duncan Dayton’s two-time championship-winning Highcroft Racing team and Michelin Tires North America.

The first two DeltaWing drivers to be confirmed include British Sportscar competitor Marino Franchitti and Nissan’s reigning FIA GT1 World Champion Michael Krumm. The car is scheduled to make its first public demonstration laps at Sebring, Fla., at 12:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, March 15.

  • 2013 Nissan GT-R
With the 2013 GT-R, Nissan is exhibiting a car that has become synonymous with outstanding sports car design, high performance and innovative technology. For model year 2013, Nissan’s flagship supercar receives numerous engine and suspension enhancements, all designed to enhance its already legendary performance.

The major refinements to the GT-R’s renowned engine include improved intake efficiency, reduced air flow resistance, including an enlarged air intake duct for the intercooler, and improved exhaust emissions efficiency and enhanced control. The 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 is hand-assembled in a special clean room, similar to racing engine construction. Horsepower is now rated at 545 horsepower, an increase of 15 hp over the 2012 GT-R. Similarly, torque has been increased to 463 pound-feet from 448 lb-ft.  The 2013 GT-R is offered in two models — the new GT-R Premium and the GT-R Black Edition, which sports special lightweight black aluminum forged RAYS wheels, unique red-and-black interior, Recaro leather-appointed seats and new dry carbon-fibre rear spoiler.

    Handout

Based on the popular NV200 multi-usage vehicle, which is available in Japan, Europe and China, the e-NV200 Concept previews a near-future production version of a full electric vehicle.

    Nissan e-NV200 Concept
Following the success of the Leaf, which Nissan claims is the world’s best-selling electric car, the automaker is unveiling an all-electric van concept — the innovative e-NV200 Concept. Based on the popular NV200 multi-usage vehicle, which is available in Japan, Europe and China, the e-NV200 Concept previews a near-future production version of a full electric vehicle. It is designed to provide businesses with flexible, roomy interior space while achieving a dramatic CO2 footprint reduction.

The e-NV200 combines a driving range similar to that of the Leaf, with payload and cargo space similar to that of the NV200. The production version will be targeted primarily at businesses, but it will also be sold for private use in major regions. The e-NV200 Concept shares its major drivetrain components with the 2012 Leaf. Silent, zero-emissions power is supplied by a lithium ion battery composed of 48 compact modules and a high-response 80-kW AC synchronous motor that generates 207 lb-ft of torque. Like the Leaf, the e-NV200 Concept offers a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that is in keeping with what consumers have come to expect from traditional, gasoline-powered vehicles, Nissan says.

    Infiniti Etherea Concept
The Etherea Concept is a compact luxury model that previews how a future entry-level Infiniti could look. The Etherea is a segment-redefining blend of coupé, sedan, hatchback and even crossover in one highly sculpted form.

Offering high performance and fuel efficiency, the Etherea is powered by a supercharged 2.5L four-cylinder engine that delivers 245 horsepower, while an electric motor provides silent, emissions-free driving at low speeds. The spacious four-seat cabin offers all the luxury consumers have come to expect from Infiniti, plus the unrivalled ease of access provided by four wide-opening, rear-hinged doors and the absence of a B-pillar, the automaker says.

As an exploration of a future entry-level Infiniti production model, the Etherea can be summed up as a four-door coupe with five-door practicality — a hatchback that doesn’t look like a hatchback.

    Infiniti JX
The new 2013 JX is the latest addition to the Infiniti lineup and goes on sale in the spring. The JX is a bold offering in the luxury crossover segment, designed, says Nissan, to excel in the areas that luxury crossover buyers demand most — interior flexibility and roominess as well as safety and anticipatory features. Inspired by versatility and convenience, the JX offers real third-row utility with easy access thanks to a forward-sliding second row.

Loaded with safety technology, the JX’s All-around Safety Shield includes Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention as well as Backup Collision Intervention — a world’s first, says Nissan. With this technology, when the transmission is in reverse, the JX will help the driver detect crossing objects behind the vehicle and, if necessary, the system will automatically engage the brakes to help avoid a collision.

The all-wheel-drive JX addresses the growing desire among luxury crossover drivers to have both responsive performance and good fuel efficiency. The standard 265-hp 3.5L DOHC V6 is mated to a sport-tuned continuously variable transmission (CVT) to provide high responsiveness and a seamless, efficient shifting feel.

  • Nissan has revealed the first details of a hatchback concept that previews the company’s next mainstream B-segment contender, to be sold alongside the Micra city car and Juke crossover.

Called Invitation, the subcompact concept – which will be unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show – shows some of what’s promised for the new model, which is due to be launched in Britain in 2013.

The Invitation is an energetic design, says Nissan, with its silhouette showcasing class-leading aerodynamics for enhanced fuel efficiency.

François Bancon, deputy division general manager of product strategy and product planning division, says: “The name we have given to this concept is self-explanatory. It is designed to be inviting thanks to its sensuous exterior design and generous and comfortable interior space, cleverly packaged within compact overall dimensions.”

Combining advanced engine technology, Nissan’s lightweight platform and an aerodynamically efficient body mean the Invitation should achieve competitive levels of fuel efficiency and emissions. Nissan is aiming for an ultra-low CO2 emission target of under 100 grams per kilometre for the most frugal model.

Among the safety features is Nissan’s advanced Around View Monitor safety technology – seen for the first time on a B-segment car – which makes reversing and parallel parking as stress-free as possible.

  • Detroit • While the exhibit floor at this year’s show is packed with pickup trucks, none of them are new. Instead, the focus is on revamped SUVs. Some, such as the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder, is all new in a traditional large truck format. But, among the new nameplates, it’s the exception. The rest are smaller SUVs aimed at younger family buyers and also at ageing Baby Boomers who are downsizing.

For 2012, there wasn’t a single cargo bed among the three finalists for North American Truck of the Year. Instead, this annual award category was populated only by SUVs — the BMW X3, Range Rover Evoque and Honda CR-V. This year, Land Rover took top honours with its all-new Evoque. This is the first time Land Rover has won the North American Truck of the Year award. Decided by a group of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada, Truck of the Year is chosen based on the following categories — value for the dollar, innovation, handling, performance, safety and driver satisfaction.

    ACURA
This small SUV prototype shown here is the second generation of the Acura RDX. This five-passenger crossover is looking to not only add an updated fascia to market but also a new engine, transmission and all-wheel-drive system. Scheduled to launch this spring, the new engine will be a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 273 horsepower— 33 more than the outgoing model. The RDX also gets a six-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter and a new, lighter all-wheel-drive system. The RDX exterior gets a longer sculpted hood with lines that draw the design out on a longer frame and wider track. This feature also translates to larger door openings, increased passenger room and more cargo space. Also new will be Amplitude Reactive Dampers, a power rear tailgate and a new motion adaptive electronic power steering system. On the tech side, look for a new three-view rear camera, advanced navigation system and up to 15 gigabytes of music storage.

    BUICK
Buick rolled out the Encore, an all-new compact SUV that Ed Welburn, head of GM design, says is a cross among utility, luxury and practicality.  The Encore taps into the young person’s need for luxury and the Boomers’ need for downsized practicality, says GM. Nicely styled, though small, it will seat five people and their cargo.

However, the Encore will also strive for fuel efficiency with a standard Ecotec 1.4L turbo four-cylinder and six-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the cabin is very Buick with a mix of dark and light tones accented with ice-blue ambient lighting and bright wood-grain trim. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel will be available.

The Encore is not due in showrooms until the first quarter of 2013.

    INFINITI
The all-new Infiniti JX35 has been unleashed here with a very specific mission — to do battle in the seven-passenger luxury SUV segment. To that end, it’s been well armed; firstly with a classic crossover look and interior appointments that feature premium materials and smart innovations. Infiniti claims the JX’s design offers extra legroom in all three rows while still leaving ample cargo space behind the third row. Innovative features include a multi-mode middle seat that opens to the third row without having to remove a child seat from the second row.

New technical innovations include an industry-first Backup Collision Intervention system, which also works with the Blind Spot Intervention protocol. This system not only warns but can also engage the brakes to avoid a collision. Offered with both front-wheel drive and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, the JX is driven by a 3.5L DOHC V6 mated to a sport-tuned CVT. The engine is rated at 265 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque.

    LEXUS
Large and luxurious, the Lexus LX 570 has debuted an updated outside look along with new interior features such as mahogany wood trim. Showing a new front spindle grille, new 20-inch alloy wheel design and upgraded interior, this eight-passenger SUV is meant to deliver luxury driving on-road and off.

For 2013, there are new LED daytime running lights, a new headlamp design and new larger fog lamp bezels. Tail lamps are also updated, while the rear licence plate surround gets a revised look and the tow hitch cover is more integrated. Both front and rear bumpers are refreshed and the side mirrors get integrated turn signals. Inside the eight-passenger cabin, the driver gets a new Easy Access seat (that moves with you), while the wheel and driver’s seat automatically retracts when the engine shuts off. Front seats get improved cooling ability and a series of cameras in the front grille and under the passenger outside mirror let the driver check hard-to-view areas. By pressing a button on the dash, the driver will get multiple views on the navigation screen. In addition, when off-road, the system remains active at less than 12 kilometres an hour in a simultaneous split-screen mode.

    NISSAN
The Pathfinder, Nissan’s best-known nameplate, takes its North American bow here — as the fourth generation of this well-known SUV. Though it’s still being called a concept, the all-new look and style of the sweeping Pathfinder body lines must be production bound. In fact, it’s probably the lack of a completed interior that resigns it to concept status. However, the Pathfinder is slated to go on sale at Canadian dealerships this fall, so Nissan will just have to be ready with its interior appointments. What we do know about the inside is that it will continue to offer three rows of seating, cargo/people flexibility and room for seven passengers. Also new in the Pathfinder will be a next-generation CVT and V6 engine that together are expected to increase combined city/highway fuel economy by 25%. A new four-wheel-drive system is being called “intuitive” and Nissan says that the Pathfinder’s towing capacity will be competitive within its segment.

Also debuting from Nissan is the e-NV200 Concept. Based on the popular Nissan NV200 multi-usage vehicle, which is available in Japan, Europe and China (it certainly looks to be the little brother of the NV commercial van), the e-NV200 Concept is a full electric vehicle. Unlike the larger NV, Nissan is suggesting that this smaller electric van may well be of equal use to businesses or families. Certainly, it will offer the typical flexible, roomy interior of a van — while also being clean and green. The e-NV200 Concept shares its major drivetrain components with the Leaf. Its power is supplied by a lithium ion battery composed of 48 compact modules and a high-response 80-kW AC synchronous motor that generates 207 lb-ft of torque.

  • Tokyo • Nissan is going to inject extra energy into its product lineup with the announcement here that Nismo — a Japanese performance-tuning enterprise that has operated (until now) outside the Nissan family — will be embraced within the corporate structure.

Photo Gallery: 2011 Tokyo Motor Show

2011 Tokyo Motor Show: Honda’s new technology put to the test

2011 Tokyo Motor Show: Cars we won’t see in Canada

Nismo has been tweaking Nissan products for 30 years and has become a very successful brand, especially here in Japan. For example, this past racing season, Nismo teams won every racing series it entered. Now, Nissan chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn wants that DNA injected into his company’s product lineup and is building the firm a new facility adjacent to Nissan’s research and development operations to make that goal a reality.

To demonstrate what the closer relationship can do, Ghosn introduced the Nismo Juke concept, a hint of what future Nismo-massaged vehicles will look like.

Ian Forsyth, Nissan Canada’s director of corporate planning and business strategy, says plans for Nismo include a range of vehicles — and he adds that he is looking “real seriously” at putting the Juke version in his dealers’ showrooms. Forsyth says the focus of Nismo will not just be tuner and performance parts, but complete vehicles such as the Juke concept. Such vehicles will be integrated into the product portfolio, taking performance and driver experience to new heights without going to the extreme, all-or-nothing level of Mercedes-Benz’s AMG models, for example.

This approach is in tune with the changes made to the Juke, a sporty compact crossover that’s already creating its own market segment with more than 232,000 units sold globally. Shinji Sasaki, chief designer in Nissan’s global design centre and the creator of the current Maxima sedan, was charged with giving the production Juke some Nismo flavour. He says the changes made to the vehicle reflect the direction he will be taking with other Nismo versions of Nissan products. Specifically, Sasaki says exterior changes that improve a vehicle’s aerodynamics and stability at speed will be one part of a Nismo makeover. Inside the cabin, controls, gauges, seats and other elements will be upgraded to make them more driver-oriented, enhancing the driving experience by adding a more sporty flair. And, naturally, engines will be tweaked to a higher level of performance.

In the case of the Nismo Juke concept, its aerodynamic efficiency — and overall look — has been improved with a body kit that includes a new grille pattern, revised lower fascias front and rear, wider fenders and side sill skirts. The tailgate spoiler has been modified by the addition of side elements to control airflow more efficiently, while the shape of the exterior mirrors has been altered to enhance aerodynamic performance and reduce front and rear lift without increasing drag.

The chassis has been lowered and stiffened using parts that will be available from an expanded Nismo parts catalogue. The new macho exterior is completed with the addition of stylish 19-inch alloy wheels. Nismo tuning experts have also worked some magic on the 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo gasoline engine, resulting in more power and higher response and performance.

Inside, Sasaki points out several changes that better interact with the driver’s senses. The tachometer, for example, has a gauge face and needle that are illuminated in red because, he says, “that instrument is very important to the driver.”
The look and feel of such items as the steering wheel, pedals, gauges, shifter knob and door trim have been redesigned to provide a greater sense of involvement for the driver. The special racing-style front seats are trimmed in soft charcoal suede with contrasting red stitching for a very sporty look.

Nismo president Shoichi Miyatani says the changes his team plans to make to future products will bring “new levels of individuality to mainstream Nissan cars such as the Juke. The future for Nismo is to develop premium sport designs for an ever-widening range of customers. Our forthcoming range of cars will be just as accessible and innovative as every Nissan product, but with added Nismo energy they will be even more fun to own and drive.”

Andy Palmer, executive vice-president of product planning, marketing and communication for Nissan, said in a roundtable chat here that the rebirth of Nismo is an exciting step forward for his company. “Nismo will go global,” Palmer promises. “It is a genuine racing asset — race car company meets car company — and its genuine DNA will be put into our production models.”

Palmer says the global sales success of the Juke proves consumers are looking for something different. “We can’t make enough of them.” As for the vehicle’s polarizing styling, he adds, “I’m cool with the fact some people hate it.”

Nissan will continue to stay true to its roots, Palmer says, executing innovative products and design such as the Juke and the zero-emissions Leaf, while also building products that generate excitement, such as the scorching hot GT-R supercar. “I can’t think of another Japanese automaker that could bring you both those types of vehicles, the Leaf and the GT-R.”

And that commitment won’t change, Palmer says. “Not while I’m in this chair. Nissan products will not be boring during my watch.”

Pointing to the Nismo Juke, Palmer says it’s an answer for customers looking for a vehicle that’s beyond the norm. “It’s energetic, distinctive and highly desirable.”

Other Nissan introductions here also included a Nismo concept version of the Leaf, as well as a trio of futuristic exercises. The ESFlow is an electric two-seater that can accelerate to 100 kilometres an hour in less than five seconds. The Townpod EV is a look at future crossover design, with interior space features that will suit business or family needs. Finally, the PIVO3 is the latest generation of a series of small, electric concepts.

This three-seater features a centre-positioned driver’s seat, with the passenger seats located on either side. Its technological features include a system that lets the car find its own parking spot, then returns to pick you up when summoned by a smartphone. Mechanically, the PIVO3’s four-wheel steering enables it to turn around in less than two metres — truly a boon for drivers having to cope with the intense traffic here.

  • Tokyo • While there are so many things that are lost in translation here, what I do get is the Japanese sense of fun and function that is apparent in the design of many of the vehicles on display at the 42nd edition of the Tokyo Motor Show. Two of the automakers aren’t even Japanese, but they still convey the same principles that make the Asian offerings stand out: They are attractive, sometimes whimsical designs that incorporate power and fuel efficiency without being boring.

Unfortunately, these cars are not scheduled to arrive in Canada any time soon, if ever.
Following are some of my favourites that I wish were available in our country:

    AUDI
A1 Sportback Audi’s A1 Sportback made its world premiere here. Unfortunately, the attractive and sporty five-door compact will not be coming to Canada, according to Audi. Four TFSI gasoline and three TDI diesel engines are available producing between 86 and 185 horsepower. Some engines also feature Audi’s seven-speed S tronic transmission. The base model is available for ¤16,950 ($23,230). The A1 Sportback will be in showrooms in early 2012.

Audi A1 Samuarai Blue is an homage to Japan’s national soccer teams.

A1 Samurai Blue Audi also took the wraps off its A1 Samurai Blue, an homage to Japan’s national soccer teams. The Samurai Blue features the colours of both the women’s and men’s soccer team jerseys — blue, red and white. The women’s soccer team won the championship title in the World Soccer Cup held in Germany this year, while the men are the reigning Asian champions.

Featuring a 1.4-litre TFSI engine producing 122 hp, the A1 Samurai Blue will be available next year.

    DAIHATSU
Daihatsu, Japan’s oldest automaker, unveiled a couple of new concepts here, including a tiny two-seater and a weird-looking mini vehicle reminiscent of a fridge on its side.

Daithatsu Pico, bridges the gap between a mini vehicle and a motorbike.

Pico The cutest offering was a funky two-seat electric vehicle reminiscent of the Smart fortwo but with a decidedly Japanese look called the Pico. The little urban commuter is touted as “bridging the gap between a mini vehicle and a motorbike” and features a width of just one metre. The electric car has a maximum speed of 50 kilometres an hour in normal mode and can be recharged via a 100-volt household power outlet.

Daihatsu, Toyota's small car affiliation, displays the company's concept zero-emission, fuel-cell vehicle called the FC Sho Case.

FC Sho Case  The FC Sho Case (spelled ShoCase and ShowCase in the press material!) is a lightweight, zero-emissions mini work vehicle equipped with Daihatsu’s liquid fuel cells that features stowable seats and steering wheel, storage under the floor and plenty of space inside. It looks like a sideways fridge on wheels or a large USB stick on wheels. No matter how you look at it, it’s pretty cool.

At a show where weird-looking vehicles rule, Honda's Micro Commuter Concept was a standout.

    HONDA
Micro Commuter Concept At a show where weird-looking vehicles rule, it’s not so easy to stand out. Honda succeeded with its Micro Commuter Concept. Featuring a lithium ion battery with a range of more than 60 km, the Micro Commuter accelerates from zero to 60 km/h in 7.4 seconds and seats up to three people.

The car features a loop battery separate from the main power source that is charged through energy regeneration and serves as an auxiliary power source for the air conditioner, audio and other systems. Once the destination is reached, this battery can be removed and used to power a laptop.

The PIVO3 is Nissan’s answer to the smart urban electric vehicle.

    NISSAN
PIVO3 Not to be confused with Daihatsu’s Pico, the PIVO3 is Nissan’s answer to the smart urban electric vehicle. Small and stylish, the PIVO3 looks more grown-up than the other urban offerings here, and it seems more sophisticated than the rest: It can park and charge itself once the driver exits the car. The driver can also ask the vehicle to meet her at a designated pick-up area via her smartphone. I could sure use one of these, especially when I forget where I parked …

    SUZUKI
Regina The bright green Regina compact car features a turbocharged gasoline engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. Weighing just 730 kilograms and emitting only 70 grams per kilometre of CO2, the Regina is as green on the inside as it is on the outside. With a roomy cabin and attractive futuristic and, at the same time, retro-looking design, the Regina is a car fit for a queen.

Q-concept Nicknamed by Yours Truly as the Suzy Q, Suzuki’s Q-concept is a freaky-looking contraption positioned between a motorcycle and a car — not that it looks like either of these conventional vehicles.
The two-seat Q-concept has an overall length of just 2.5 m. It’s so cute, it looks like a toy! The little car would be perfect for city commuters who want to make a statement.

    PEUGEOT
3008 Hybrid 4 Peugeot claims to have developed the first ever diesel hybrid in the world with its 3008 Hybrid 4. Scheduled for release in Europe at the end of the year and later on in Japan, the 3008 Hybrid 4 is powered by an FF diesel engine, with an electric motor and hybrid module at the rear of the car. The front engine is a 2.0L diesel producing 163 hp, while the electric motor kicks in an additional 37 hp.

Despite its total output of 200 hp, the 3008 Hybrid 4 manages to keep CO2 emissions down to 99 grams per kilometre. It’s powerful and fuel efficient.
